Port Phillip Bay's wide expanse is a popular choice for boating enthusiasts who launch powerboats, yachts and other watercraft on the mostly calm waters. There's usually a breeze to fill your sails, as well as excellent facilities, including launching ramps and marinas.

If you don’t have your own boat, you can hire one from one of the local boat hire operators. You don’t require a license if you are over 16 years of age, and the boat is not capable of travelling at over 20 knots. Alternatively, join a boat charter and let someone else do the driving.

For something a little different, board a ferry to the wilderness of French Island or the more inhabited Phillip Island. Or take a ferry ride from one side of the bay to the other – a ferry travels hourly between Sorrento and Queenscliff. Along the way you will see The Rip, the narrow and treacherous entrance to Port Phillip Bay, and the peninsulas that encompass it. You may even come close to some of the big ships as they enter and leave the bay.
